What's New For the 2021 Toyota 4Runner?

The most significant change for 2021 on the Toyota 4Runner is the new Trail Special Edition trim. The Trail Special Edition adds more off-road features for those seeking adventure, including 40-quart coolers in the cargo area. The Trail Special Edition has a choice of custom exterior colors, including army green or black, and it also has black-accented upholstery. All around, the 4Runner still offers some of the most innovative safety features in its class. Along with its durability, the 4Runner provides exceptional comfort with premium infotainment systems and many conveniences.

Which Trims & Features Are Available in 2021?

The first of nine 2021 4Runner trims is the SR5. There is no shortage of features to create a comfortable and safe ride in this trim. The SR5 has standard seating for five, but you can add another row to fit seven. An intuitive infotainment display screen is standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. Alloy dark gray wheels give the Trail Special Edition a unique look.

The Trail Special Edition has a cargo basket mounted to the top for extra storage capacity. An accessory cooler with tie-down straps beckons adventure. SofTex seats are standard on the SR5 Premium. This trim also offers seating for seven, and it comes with heated side mirrors. More rugged features are added to the TRD Off-Road, including a part-time four-wheel drive and a locking rear differential.

The Off-Road Premium adds a push-button start and keyless entry. Metallic-gray 17-inch wheels complete the exterior of the Venture Special Edition, which also gets a black rear spoiler. Larger 20-inch alloy wheels and leather-trimmed seats are included on the Limited. The Nightshade Edition gets black alloy wheels and black exterior accents, and the TRD Pro gets 17-inch matte wheels.

Toyota 4Runner Performance

A V6 engine is standard on all 2021 4Runner trims. This engine has the same maximum power output for all trims, which amounts to 270 HP. The engine creates slightly more torque at 278 LB-FT. An automatic transmission is standard for all trims, but you can get four-wheel drive for most trims except the Limited and the SR5. Those trims come with two-wheel drive.
