Image: 2026 Toyota Highlander Now Offers Standard All-Wheel Drive on Every Trim

Toyota has made all-wheel drive (AWD) standard on every 2026 Highlander trim. This three-row SUV blends comfort with capability, making it a strong choice for both daily commutes and weekend getaways. The AWD system works alongside a turbocharged engine and automatic transmission to provide reliable performance in a wide range of driving conditions.

All-Wheel Drive With Enhancements

The 2026 Highlander’s AWD system is designed to adapt to different roads and terrains. Normal Mode handles everyday driving, Eco Mode helps improve fuel economy on longer trips, Sport Mode sharpens response for a more engaging feel, and Snow Mode adds extra control on slippery surfaces. Multi-Terrain Select gives drivers even more options, with settings like Rock & Dirt for rugged trails and Mud & Sand for looser ground. Added features such as Vehicle Stability Control, Trailer Sway Control, and Dynamic Torque Vectoring further enhance safety, towing confidence, and cornering ability.

Other Powertrain Highlights

Under the hood, the Highlander is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 265 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with Direct Shift technology for smooth, responsive gear changes. Estimated fuel economy comes in at 28 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg in the city, all while running on regular unleaded fuel. With the proper setup, the Highlander can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The SUV also features durable suspension components, including an independent front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension for added stability. The XSE trim upgrades to a sport-tuned suspension, while a trailing-wishbone design strengthens chassis performance. An electronic parking brake adds convenience to daily use.
