The 2019 Toyota Prius is a great choice for buyers seeking a hybrid vehicle. This is especially true since it has been updated and now offers an all-wheel drive option, known as AWD-e. This is the first time that Toyota has provided this option in the Prius for the US market, which is the result of high consumer demand. This change now makes the Prius highly competitive as it relates to the fuel efficiency of an all-wheel drive vehicle.
In prior years, the Toyota Prius provided One, Two, Three and Four designations, which have now been replaced by those common of other Toyota models. The designations used for the 2019 Toyota Prius are L, LE and XLE, as well as Limited trim packages.
Born out of a need to accommodate optimal aerodynamics, the Toyota Prius has had a silhouette that was clearly recognizable from all angles. The priority given to vehicle efficiency has resulted in design limitations, although worth it for the large storage capacity that can fit more than 65 cubic feet of cargo.
The 2019 Toyota Prius has received a facelift with aesthetic changes that were much needed. The changes to the style of the 2019 Prius include softer angles where the hood and headlights meet and air intakes that are more curved than in prior years. The new Prius also has extended taillights that are positioned across the hatch and no longer expand up the sides of the vehicle.
The 2019 Toyota Prius maintains the same fuel economy and front-wheel drive. However, the all-wheel drive version now has Toyota's e-system that powers the rear wheels with an electric motor and does not require a differential or driveshaft. It also contains a nickel-metal hydride battery that accommodates harsh climates. This is different from the lithium-ion battery in the front-wheel drive Prius.
The front wheel drive Toyota Prius has a slight fuel economy benefit over the all wheel drive Prius, which has earned a fuel economy rating of 50 mpg.
Every Toyota vehicle is equipped with safety features and the Prius is no exception with advanced safety features that are part of Toyota's Safety Sense P package. The new Prius is equipped with adaptive cruise control that helps drivers maintain an appropriate and safe distance from cars while on the highway. Although the blind spot warning feature isn't standard, it remains an option. The 2019 Toyota Prius has pedestrian detection, emergency braking, lane keeping assist and lane departure warning.
The Toyota Prius has received the NHTSA 5-Star Overall Safety Rating and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick.
