Toyota is deeply committed to safeguarding the environment's health, going well beyond the mere emphasis on electrifying its vehicle range. The environmental impact of automotive batteries, if not disposed of correctly, is significant. Sadly, a considerable number of these batteries end up in landfills, exacerbating the ongoing pollution crisis. Yet, these end-of-life batteries contain materials that could be reclaimed and repurposed. To address this, Toyota has forged a partnership with Cirba Solutions, a company boasting over six decades of battery recycling expertise. Cirba Solutions offers comprehensive services, encompassing the collection, transportation, and extraction of vital elements from old batteries.
This collaboration between Toyota Motor North America and Cirba Solutions marks an expansion of the automaker’s recycling network for BEVs, PHEVs, and HEVs. Cirba Solutions boasts an impressive 95% recovery rate for extracting critical elements, reducing costs for Toyota while propelling it closer to its aim of a closed-loop system for battery recycling. Additionally, Cirba Solutions recently received a substantial grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, enhancing its facility in Lancaster, Ohio. This facility will focus on extracting battery-grade materials from end-of-life batteries, reintroducing them into the supply chain for future use in EVs.
