The Toyota i-Road has finally hit stateside. Dallas residents were able to see terrific demonstrations of the new electric vehicle and to hear how it could change the face of Dallas’ infamous traffic gridlock.

The i-Road is a three-wheeled electric super-mini car that the automaker hopes will be an answer to over-populated highways. The i-Road is part of a community car sharing project similar to that of the popular Citi Bike program, which would allow people to drive and drop-off the car at various points around the city.

“As we look for ways to ease congestion in major hubs like the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, we are exploring how these types of electric vehicles may fit into the transportation landscape,” said Jim Lentz, chief executive officer, Toyota North America. “We’re excited to show Texans where these advanced technologies could take us.”

The i-Road program is already underway in France, as well as Toyota’s home county of Japan. So far the project has been successful, which is a big reason why the automaker is bringing this new type of car tech to the States.

There’s no word yet on when the i-Road program will kick off in the U.S., but for now take a look at the video below to see the i-Road in action!
