The low-slung sports car from Toyota just keeps getting better with new features and improvements every year. The 2019 edition proves the point. It's just such an exciting car you don't know where to start with trying to describe it.
The 2019 Toyota 86 is available in three different trim packages. All trims comes with 17-inch spoke-like wheels. Led headlights and turn signals with LED and daytime running lights and rear LED brake and turn signals complete the exterior lighting package. It has dual, color-matched side mirrors. A rear window defogger is standard equipment. To complete the exterior package, check out the front air vents at the side mirror area, dual exhausts, rear bumper diffuser plus the 86 badges.
The interior highlights include excellently designed seats which just seem to hug you into the ideal seating position. The steering wheel is wrapped tilting and telescoping. The center of the steering wheel has the 86 badge instead of the Toyota emblem. The tachometer, not the speedometer, dominates the instrument cluster and completes the racecar driver look and feel. The buyer gets a lot for a base model. The GT exterior upgrades include a color-keyed aerodynamic rear wing, power, heated side mirrors, and protective underbody panel.
All this is in addition to every feature of the base model. Interior upgrades from the base model are dual-zone automatic climate control with individual temp settings. A smart key system that includes remote entry, panic and trunk release functions. The anti-theft system also has an engine immobilizer that kills the engine if the car is stolen. Other electronic differences include a 4.2-inch multi-function information display and heated front seats. The top trim package, the TRD Special Edition, has a whole list of additional features. 18-inch alloy wheels give the TRD a beefed-up, full fender look.
A rear spoiler plus front, sides, and rear underbody spoilers give this low set model additional shielding from road debris. The TRD dual exhausts are performance exhausts, and they sound like it. The side graphic breaks up the all-black finish nicely. It also has Brembo brakes with SACHS dampers, a heavy duty stopping system with big stopping power. With the TRD, you get all the GT features plus a two-toned, leather-wrapped steering wheel with red stitching against the black leather cover. Also included is a stitched 86 center cap logo with audio and MID controls. A leather-covered red stitched parking brake, red and black front bucket seats, suede-covered dash, seat backs, red seatbelts complete the TRD's additional interior features.
All 3 trim packages feature the same engine with almost identical specs. The Base, GT and TRD SE all have the 2.0, 4 cylinder, DOHC 16 valve heads with variable valve timing. Horsepower is rated at around 200 with 156lb.-ft (foot-pounds) of torque.
Compression ratio for all three is 12.5:1, and all three have a limited slip differential for better driver control. The big difference is the massive braking power of the TRD SE.
Safety features for all three are and should be the same. All three have vehicle safety control, airbags in all the right places and 3-point safe seatbelts. A tire pressure monitor system is also a feature of all three trims. The 86 scored a 4 out of 5 rating in the NHTSA Overall Front Star Rating.
