Toyota sees solar power as an essential element of our collective future. As a cleaner alternative to the traditional fossil fuels of the past century, solar energy is necessary for protecting our natural world. To celebrate this unique and sustainable power system, Toyota has revealed the Vivid Solar Sculptural Display, now open to everyone at its Research & Development branch in Michigan.

Vivid Solar Sculptural Display Helps Harvest Energy

Formed from a joint effort between Toyota’s Advanced Product Planning Office (APPO) and the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA), this lovely installation marries solar mechanics with vibrant design patterns. Beyond its aesthetic qualities, the project actively harvests clean energy. Securing independent renewable energy fields is vital to sustaining our modern lifestyle as fossil fuel levels drop.

Built to a 1/6th physical scale, this carbon-free, standalone exhibit consists of 11 three-sided pillars. Using lenticular lenses, the team managed to effectively hide the solar collectors while preserving their energy-gathering functions. In simple terms, the sculpture acts as an elegant artistic creation and a functional environmental achievement that produces clean electricity.

The historical path of this exceptional project is quite deep. Although the formal request for development took place in 2020, the base tech was created over ten years ago. Co-project leader Songtao Wu, a senior principal scientist in the Materials Research Department, mentioned that TMC first ran tests on nanotechnology dynamic color pigments 12 years prior, intending to eventually use them for solar grids.

Though funded by TMC, APPO sponsored the project for the North American automotive sector, managing budgets and pushing for retail sales potential. Today, this Vivid colored solar system can be added to standard solar panels while retaining more than 90% of the equipment's baseline efficiency.

Co-project leader Brian Woods is excited to see the real-world application of the Vivid Solar setup. "When you think about the potential for advertising and corporate displays, the return on investment is strong," he says, adding that this innovative hardware blends a clean energy source with infinite marketing potential.
