Toyota Safety Sense was created because Toyota made safety a key priority long before introducing one of the world’s most recognized driver-assist systems. The company has an entire division dedicated to advancing safety technologies. In 2011, Toyota launched the Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC) to strengthen its commitment to mobility safety. Since then, the CSRC has worked alongside universities, hospitals, and experts to explore ways to reduce crash injuries, better understand driver behavior, and help prevent accidents. The results have been impressive.
Toyota Safety Research Center Completes 100th Project
Toyota’s CSRC focuses heavily on research aimed at reducing the risk of collisions. Since crashes can be life-threatening, every safety improvement that helps protect drivers and passengers marks meaningful progress. On June 3, 2025, Toyota announced that its collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) AgeLab led to the CSRC’s 100th completed research project.
Commenting on the milestone, CSRC Director Danil Prokhorov described it as “a significant milestone for CSRC and our commitment to pursuing Toyota’s vision of a future safe mobility society for all with the ultimate goal of zero traffic fatalities.” The research with MIT examined how drivers and pedestrians interact with technology, including mobile devices and in-car touchscreens.
The 100th project, supported by MIT AgeLab scientist Dr. Bryan Reimer, highlighted the strong collaboration between Toyota and MIT. The study generated valuable findings, including data on voice-based human-machine interaction and driver-pedestrian behavior. Researchers also looked at how driver-assist features influence behavior and how drivers manage non-driving-related tasks.
Looking ahead, Toyota’s research center is already planning its next 10 projects. Upcoming collaborations will involve the University of Waterloo, Oregon State University, Ohio State University Injury Biomechanics Research Center, and Auburn University. For now, Toyota is celebrating this major achievement while working to apply these insights to make driving safer for all.
