The all-new Toyota Mirai got high marks at the recent New York International Auto Show, as it was named the 2016 World Green Car! The four-door sedan was one of seven other vehicles from around the world selected to compete in the competition. The cars were judged on things like tailpipe emissions, fuel consumption, and use of a major powerplant technology.
Known as “the car of the future,” the hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle emits zero emissions and delivers a range of 300 miles. On top of these benefits, it achieves a maximum speed of 111 miles per hour and doesn’t come with the limitations associated with a charging cord. Powered by a front-mounted electric engine, the Mirai delivers 151 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque – plenty of power to get you where you need to go fast. Behind the rear seats, you’ll find a 1.6-kWh nickel-metal hydride battery that provides added power when it’s needed.
“Just as Prius changed the world nearly 20 years ago, the hydrogen-powered Mirai is ready to make history,” said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division. “With a range of over 300 miles per tank, a refueling time of under five minutes, and emissions that consist only of water vapor, Mirai is leading the world forward toward a more sustainable future.”
Mirai pulled ahead of seven other vehicles to earn the recognition. Tailpipe emissions, fuel consumption, and use of a major advanced powerplant technology were all elements that the car scored very well on.

Aside from its impressive mechanical components under the hood, the Mirai also comes well equipped with plenty of savvy standard features: 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, LED headlights, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way heated power front seats with power lumbar adjustments, heated rear seats and a heated tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel.
Mirai is currently only available for purchase in California. This is because of the very limited refueling stations that are, as of right now, only offered in certain regions of the Golden State. However, Toyota does have plans to add more refueling stations to states in the northeast, including New York and Massachusetts, which will make Mirai ownership available to many more drivers.
