Called “Intelligent Transportation Systems,” the Prius will be the first of Toyota’s cars to get this groundbreaking technology, which will allow it to “talk” to other cars on the road, as well as nearby traffic signals. Available initially only in Toyota’s home country of Japan, this new technology will be tested to see how it works in real time driving.
Basically, the system will be an added safety feature that tells a car if an upcoming light has turned red or if a car in the intersection is running the light. It will also be able to detect pedestrians and accelerate and decelerate based on these various situations on the road.
The goal of the system is to give drivers even more warning when a possible collision might occur, causing a marked decrease in accidents involving Toyota cars. We’ll have to wait and see when this new technology becomes available in the States, but we’ll keep you posted as we hear more about this exciting new safety tech from Toyota!
