2018 Toyota RAV4 AWD

If you want an SUV with all-wheel drive, there are many possibilities at Toyota. Five models offer AWD, but there are some differences in the systems offered. Then there are some four-wheel drive models which may interest you.

Gas-Powered Crossovers and SUVs

You will find Dynamic Torque-Control All-Wheel Drive on the gas-powered Highlander and RAV4. This gives shoppers a three-row and a two-row choice. RAV4 AWD ground clearance is 6.5 inches, and Highlanders AWD are rated at eight inches.

Dynamic Torque-Control systems deliver power to the front wheels, mimicking front-wheel drive for the best fuel economy. Then when needed, it balances engine power between the front and back wheels. This lets it deliver four-wheel drive capability without requiring any intervention on the part of the driver. It automatically shifts torque to the wheels that need it. The system is designed to work as well on dry roads as it does on wet ones.

Hybrid Crossovers and SUVs

All-Wheel Drive with Intelligence is standard on the RAV4 Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid. Once again providing two-row and three-row models, Toyota manages to provide the choices that shoppers need to suit the size of their family. Fuel economy is well above average for these AWD vehicles. Highlander Hybrids earn 30 mpg city and 28 mpg highway while RAV4 Hybrids can earn 34/30 mpg city/highway. RAV4 Hybrids also gain ground clearance, rising to seven or even 7.4 inches.

Hybrid AWD-I

The front and rear wheels of the RAV4 and Highlander Hybrid are driven differently than with the regular engine models. Special electric motors deliver torque to the front and rear wheels. Similar to the gas-only vehicles, hybrid AWD-I can regulate the ride without any help from the driver. As such, drivers will notice more accurate responses to road conditions, whether the day is dry or wet.

Toyota Sienna Minivan

On the LE, XLE, XLE Premium and Limited editions of the 2018 Toyota Sienna, you can get Dynamic Torque All-Wheel Drive. In fact, Siennas are the only minivan to have this important option. Adding AWD raises the suspension, helping the Sienna AWD models to claim 6.6 inches of ground clearance.

Other Possible Choices

If you are more interested in four-wheel capability than all-weather capability, you have even more choices at Toyota. Obviously the Toyota Tundra full-size and Tacoma mid-size trucks have four-wheel drive options. The Land Cruiser's multi-mode, full-time 4x4 system is available on the 4Runner and Sequoia. This provides a multi-terrain select function and five-speed Crawl Control. Ground clearance is 8.9 inches for the Land Cruiser and more than nine inches on both the 4Runner and Sequoia. The 4Runner also offers a part-time four-wheel drive system for road as well as off-road use.
